A Genealogical Discovery

Christopher Benson

THE CHRISTOPHER BENSON GENEALOGY

Christopher Benson was born on Sept. 29, 1720 (old style) in Saint Sidwell Parish, City of Exeter, in Devonshire, England.  With the hopes of being able to locate a record of his baptism if in case he was baptised, as this record would give me the name of his parents, I wrote to Rev. M. Lanyon Owen, M.A. St. Sidwell Rectory, Exeter, Devonshire, England, during the year 1930 and asked him to examine his records of baptisms for a record of the baptism.  He turned my letter over to Mrs. Agnes Incledon, the assistant verger.  I will quote, as follows, her letter in part to me: “I will start the searching of our records without delay and as soon as I find anything, I will forward it to you.  There is no record of any baptism between 1720 and 1723, but I may find other records that may help you.”  I did not hear anything further from her.  About the only hopes we now have left to trace his English ancestry is to locate a copy of his coat-of-arms.  ___have a vast quantity of most vital English Benson ancestral ____ and feel certain if I only knew the names of his parents, I could then connect him up with my English Benson ancestral data.  Nu___ Bensons were granted coats-of-arms, and if I could only locate a copy of this Christopher Benson’s coat-of-arms, it would give me something definite to work upon.  I feel almost certain that Christopher Benson must of had a Benson coat-of-arms as he was of wealth and culture.  A process of elimination could be used to connect him up with the right branch of the Benson family, _____ even if in case we were never able to ascertain the names of his parents.

Christopher Benson was sent to America, by the Crown, to aid Colonists in trying to surpress the Indians.  Prior to his departure for America, he placed all of his silver-ware in a large velvet lined chest, and buried this chest on his property, in England.  After the Revolutionary War, this silver-ware was claimed by the Crown, to help defray the expense of the Revolutionary Ware, a __ the empty chest was turned over to Christopher Benson.  I do not know what-ever happened to this chest, but suppose it must be in the possession of one of his descendants.  I know this chest was brought to America, and it was still in existence about sixty years ago.  Christopher Benson arrived in America prior to May 12, 1759.  Upon his arrival, he was made an officer in a command of militia.  To be given this position, he must have been a man of importance.

On May 12, 1759, Christopher Benson married the widow Mary Simmons, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, New York City.  A lot has been said about Christopher Benson having been married more than once, but according to old New York deeds and his old family, he was only married once.  Their marriage license clearly stated that Mary Simmons was a widow of New York City.

All published records state that Christopher Benson married a Mary Simmons, and the name is spelled various ways, such as Simmons, Simons, Simmonds and Simonds.  Their marriage license or bond was on file in the State Library, at Albany, N.Y. at this time this library was almost completed destroyed by fire, many years ago, but fortunately this license or bond was saved.  It is now on file in the new State Library, at Albany, New York, but the edges are very badly charred, by the fire.  This license of bond clearly states that Christopher Benson married Mary Simmons, a widow of New York City, and a John Smith signed or witnessed this license or bond.

One of my mother’s paternal aunts had, in her possession, a tea caddy, which originally belonged to Christopher Benson.  On the lid of this tea caddy, “C. M. B.” is inscribed upon same, meaning “Christopher and Mary Benson”.

In regards to Christopher Benson’s old family Bible, this Bible record gives the date of the birth and also the date of the death of a Mary Benson, his wife,   All of the other entries of birth, marriage and death, cover his issue.

On March 1, 1938, the Register’s Office, Hall of Records, County of New York, New York City, N.Y., advised me that an examination of their records disclosed two deeds made by Christopher Benson and Mary, his wife, dated March 26, 1768, and April 2, 1772.  Also one deed made to Christopher Benson, individually, dated November 26, 1767.

Due to the way Christopher Benson named his children, it is my supposition that he married a Mary Brewerton, the daughter of an Elizabeth Brewerton.

A George Brewerton and a James Brewerton were Ensigns in the second battalion of DeLacy’s Corps.  They went to Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1783, and were grantees of city lots.  Both received half pay.

A George Brewerton, a hatter, born in London, England, in 1665, was confidential clerk, in 1689, for Francis Nicholson, Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of New York.  New York Marriages state that a George Brewerton married an Antie Blancke on November 24, 1684, and this must have been the same George Brewerton.  The will of Catherine Blanck, of New York City, dated September 1 1698, mentions the children of her daughter, Antie, the widow of George Brewerton, but she does not mention the names of these children in said will.  Once of the executors of this will was an Abraham Brewerton, and he was either a brother, father or else some kin of the George Brewerton who had married Antie Blanck.

It has been stated that George Brewerton, the hatter as born during the year 1665, had a son, George Brewerton.  This George Brewerton took the oath of freeman in the City of New York, on November 24, 1741, and entered the service as a second lieutenant on June 11, 1745.  In 1756, he was a captain in Colonel Eleazer Fish’s Regiment, and was on the staff of Governor Morris as a clerk.  A Muster Roll of the company in 1758 numbers 97 men, and in May, of that year, a warrant was drawn in his favor for 1,006 pounds bounty for enlisting 93 men.  At the close of the war, he was elected alderman in the city of New York, and served in that capacity of as Justice of the Peace from 1765 to 1785.  He had a son, George Brewerton, 3, who was born in the City of New York, during the year 1737.  The following letter, written in his behalf, exerted an influence over his future life:

                                                            “New York, Aug. 27, 1756.

Mr. Richard Morris asked me the other day if there was any room for a Lieutenant, and told me his clerk, Capt. Brewerton’s son, about nineteen years of age, of whom he gives exceeding good character, is desirous of engaging in the service, having a view to get among the Regular hereafter if he can.  I you think it proper to give him a commission, perhaps you may have an opportunity of doing it in Johnson’s company.  I am told that he is a young man of good spirit, and does not know how to provide for himself otherwise at present, so it would be serving him, and it may be the public at the same time.

                                                                                    G. W. Banyer

To Oliver Delancy, Esq.

As a result of this letter, Mr. Brewerton was commissioned a Lieutenant undervis his father, Capt. George Brewerton, Senior, August, 1757, was commissioned Captain on May 3, 1759, Major on May 14, 1759, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1 Regiment on May 15, 1760, and Colonel in 1761.

During the Revolution, Brewerton was charged with treasonable and dangerous conspiracies against the Whig cause, and at the instance of Livingston, Morris and Jay, a warrant was issued in June 1776, by General Green for his apprehension and the seizure of his papers.

Brewerton surrendered himself to the General, who sent him to his accusers.  IN his examination, he stated that instead of aiding the ministerial armies, he had persuaded men to enlist in the Continental service.  He was held to good behaviour to the Whigs in a bond of five hundred pounds, with Jacob Brewerton as security.

Subsequently, he entered the service of the crown, and commanded the Second Battalion of DeLancey’s Brigade.  He died at Jamaica on September 15, 1779, universally beloved and his death greatly lamented.  Fort Brewerton, New York State, was named in his honor.

It is my supposition that Mary, the wife of Christopher Benson, and George Brewerton, as born in 1737, were brother and sister.  A William Simmons, of New York, hatter, appointed his friend, George Brewerton, of New York, hatter, attorney and executor of his estate - dated September 17, 1744.  I have been unable to locate of the will of this William Simmons, and understand the will has been lost.  Perhaps this William Simmons had a son, and the son married a Mary, the daughter of this George Brewerton, due to the said George Brewerton and the said William Simmons have been friends.

On the following page, I will give a list of Brewerton marriages, as per New York Marriages, which seem to show  strong tie-up.

Catherine Brewerton married Isaac Teller on November 8, 1762.  Elizabeth Brewerton married George Evans, on October 12, 1758.  George Brewerton married Anite Blancke, on November 24, 1684.  George Brewerton, Jr. married Jacobe Dehart, on July 19, 1764.  Hannah Brewerton married Isaac Stoutenburgh, on July 29, 1766.  Jacob Brewerton married Helena Fresneau, on June 17, 1760.  Sarah Brewerton married Richard Albouy, on December 21, 1760.

In regards to John Smith, he was a cartman of New York City, and he sealed his will on October 12, 1764.  In said will, he mentioned his wife Catharine; daughter, Elizabeth, under age; and his children, John Deborah and Catherine.  He appointed, as his executors, his wife, Catherine, and his brothers-in-law, John Lee and Christopher Benson.  This John Smith might have married a Catherine Brewerton.  Christopher Benson could not have married a Mary Smith, the sister of this John Smith as said John Smith did not have any sister by that name.  John Smith, the father of this John Smith, sealed his will on March 22, 1715/6, and same was proved on October 27, 1716.  In said will, he mentioned his wife, Deborah, and his children, Michael, John and Frances Smith.

While residing in the United States, Christopher Benson seems to have made his home in Eastampton, Long Island, New York.

When the Revolutionary War broke out, Christopher Benson espoused the Loyalist side, and he was an efficient officer in a Loyalist corp.  He was a captain the Rangers, in the British Army, during the Revolutionary War.  One record states that Christopher Benson was in camp, near Brooklyn, N. Y., in 1778, and that he lost a colt.  In 1782, he was an addresser of Commissary Scott.

After the Revolutionary Ware, all of Christopher’s Benson’s property on Long Island, N. Y. was confiscated, and Christopher Benson and his family had to flee for their lives.  Christopher Benson, realizing that the Colonies were going to win the conflict, sent his son, Christopher Benson Jr. to Nova Scotia, a short time before the close of the Revolutionary War, on a sailing vessel, with the frame for building a house, and all of the furniture and silver.

Christopher Benson and his family evacuated New York during the summer of the year 1783, being passengers on a fleet of thirteen British sailing vessels.  When Christopher Benson arrived in Nova Scotia, he found his son, Christopher Benson, Jr., married to Lucy Dunn.

Christopher Benson, Sr. settled at Granville, in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.  He owned six slaves.  The Muster Roll of the discharged officers and disbanded soldiers and Loyalist, taken in the County of Annapolis, Nova Scotia, between the 18 day and the 29 day of June of the year 1784, contained the names of Christopher Benson, Sr. who with family - eleven in all (including six servants) settled at Granville; Christopher Benson,  Jr. who settled at Wilmot, and Benjamin Seaman, Esquire (three in family), and Richard Seaman (seven in the family) also settled at Granville, which is just across the Annapolis River from the town of Annapolis Royal in the Annapolis Valley.

The names of Christopher Benson - father and son, appear among the original grantees of the township in 1784.  The Annapolis records show that Christopher Benson, Sr. was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1786 or 1794, and Christopher Benson, Jr. Was appointed to the same office in 1815.

A tract of land, west of West Branch, Bear River, Nova Scotia, was granted to Captain Christopher Benson, Sr., Christopher Benson, Jr., William Benson and James Ettridge on January 4, 1787.

In 1793, Christopher Benson, Sr., was a major in the Annapolis Regiment of Militia.  Some of his descendants claim for him the rank of colonel.

Christopher Benson, Sr. was a man of considerable culture and intelligence, for nearly forty years gave active and efficient gratuitous service in militia affairs.  He was buried on June 21, 1817, in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.

Mary, the wife of Christopher Benson, Sr., was born on December 11, 1731, and she died on September 3, 1805.  She had, be her first husband ------- Simmons, Hannah Simmons, born January 11, 1753; died September 10, 1784, and, perhaps, never married, and Mary Simmons, born April 20 or 28, 1756, married William Dement or Demont, on March 8, 1777, in New York City.

The story goes that Christopher Benson, on his way to Nova Scotia, happened to notice several bales on board the vessel with his name written on same.  Upon making inquiries as to their contents, and ascertaining that they only contained cotton, he immediately, ordered them thrown over-board, and this request or demand was granted.

He was never used to hard work, and in order to be able to get along during his remaining years of life, in Nova Scotia, he was forced to sell portions of his land grant, in Nova Scotia, from time to time, and at the time of his death, very little of this original grant was remaining.

It has been said that when Christopher Benson’s son, Christopher Benson, Jr., was married, he had a “Gentleman’s Wedding”.  The bride and her attendants had thirty white horses for the bridal procession, and the bride and her attendants rode them to Church, according to gentry custom.

When the Lord Mayor, of London, England, visited Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Christopher Benson, Sr. was the only one of sufficient education to be able to deliver the oration.

1.    Christopher Benson, born June 6, 1760 or 1761; married Lucy Dunn.
