Martine's Genealogy

A Genealogical Discovery

Kingston Goddard Hadley

Kingston Goddard Hadley was born Dec 31 1898 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died sometime after 1935. In 1935 Kingston G Hadley mailed a letter to a person in Minden LA with several generations of Hadley genealogy. This is the last record I can find for him. He was living with his parents in the 1930 census but there is no record of him in the 1940 census. I believe he never married and left no children.

His parents were Helen Marguerite Goddard and Frank Howard Hadley. They were married Oct 21, 1987 in Morton, PA and in 1900 were living in Media Borough, Delaware, PA.

Kingston had three siblings, Frank H (Apr 22, 1902 – Jan 30, 1985), Theodore Daniel (Apr 22, 1906 – Apr 1973) and Helen Elizabeth (Apr 28, 1909 - ?)

Frank Hadley was born July 9, 1864 in Pennsylvania and died March 20, 1938. Frank’s father was Theodore D Hadley born about 1820 in New York and working as an Editor in the 1880 census, his mother was Elizabeth A Hadley born about abt 1831 in PA. They had a total of seven children of which Frank was the third oldest.

Helen M Goddard was born Oct 21, 1875 in PA and died on Aug 28, 1958 in Media PA. Her father was Dr. Kingston Goddard born in Nov 27, 1839 in New York and died Jan 7, 1902 in Philadelphia PA. As a young man he decided upon the medical profession as his life work, and in order to prepare for that line of enterprise entered the University of Pennsylvania, in the medical department of which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He gained distinctive prestige as a physician and surgeon in Philadelphia, where he was for many years assistant surgeon in the United States Army & Navy Hospital.  Although not a politician in any sense of the word, he was a stalwart Democrat in his political convictions.  June 4, 1863, was solemnized his marriage to Helen Van Syckle, who was born in Philadelphia, April 8, 1841, a daughter of Elijah and Sarah Belinda (Smith) Van Syckle, the former of whom was born August 16, 1788, and died in Philadelphia, February 1, 1855 and the latter of whom was born April 28, 1799, and died in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, February 19, 1891.  All the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Syckle are deceased.  To Dr. and Mrs. Kingston Goddard were born the following children:  Kingston Stanley, born April 25, 1864; Walker Herbert, born November 20, 1865; Helen Belinda; E. Claude, born September 5, 1868, married September 13, 1889, Jane Blanche Crump; Josephine Camille, is the wife of Dr. Davison, as noted above; Elwood Wilson, born September 2, 1873, married Catherine Stillwell; Helen Marguerite, born October 21, 1875, married Frank H. Hadley

His father Rev. Kingston Goddard Sr was born Apr 20, 1814 and died Oct 24, 1875 in PA and his mother Matilda Susan Seaman in New York. Kingston Sr was born Apr 20, 1814 and died Oct 24, 1875. He married Matilda on Dec 6, 1836 at St. Luke’s Church in New York City, NY. Matilda was born Jul 16, 1814 in NY and died Aug 25, 1889 in Bergen Point, NJ. Both Rev. Kingston Goddard and Matilda Susan (Seaman) Goddard are buried in Woodland Cemetery, Philadelphia.

The Church of Atonement, at Seventeenth and Sumner Streets, Philadelphia, was erected for him and he was a pastor of the same for many years preceding his demise, which occurred October 24, 1875.  He was a man of broad mind and unusual intelligence and in his religious work accomplished a remarkable amount of good for humanity at large.

Helen’s mother was Helen Van Syckel born Apr 8, 1841 PA and died Sep 9, 1882; she was the daughter of Elijah Van Syckel and Sarah Belinda Smith. Elijah Van Syckel, the son of Aaron and Katherine Opdyke Van Syckel, was born 16 August 1788. He married Belinda Smith (1799-1871), the daughter of Robert and Mary Armstrong Smith, 22 January 1818. They had ten children. He died 11 Feb. 1855. Decesendants lived in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
